Competition Rules
-
All the Potjies must be prepared from scratch. Prior marinating will be allowed, but potjies cannot be pre-cooked. Ingredients can be prepared (washed, peeled, sliced & cut) beforehand to save time, but all the cooking must be done on site.
-
All entries must be cooked in a traditional cast iron potjie or dutch oven. If you don’t have a potjie, this is the ideal time to get yourself one. There are various options available from Amazon. (search 3 legged cast iron pot).
-
The potjie must cater for a minimum of 10 people and judges. Suggested size for a potjie is Size 3 filled up to ¾ full.
-
Ensure all equipment is safe and suitable for open-fire cooking. Please ensure your potjies are clean and rust free.
-
Potjies can be cooked over wood/coals or gas (sigh). Bring your own. No electricity is available.
-
No open fires on the ground allowed. Fires must be made in a portable grill or a burn barrel/half drum. Burn barrels can be ordered with your tickets if you do not wish to bring a grill.
-
All potjies must be ready for presentation at the allocated time.
-
Judges will visit all the cooking sites while the Potjies are being prepared, and judging will take place at your station, at the specified cut-off time.
-
Participants must maintain cleanliness at their cooking stations. Please observe proper safety and hygiene practices at all times.
-
After judging, your potjie will be shared with everyone.
-
Fires need to be put out before leaving and the area must be left like you found it. All coal, ash and fire debris must be removed.
-
Please ensure an enjoyable event for everyone by behaving in a respectful and considerate manner at all times.
-
No vehicles will be allowed in the competition area once the first fire has been lit, due to the potential fire hazzard.
Clean up and trash

Please help us keep the campground clean. Please leave the area you occupied as clean as you found it and pick up any trash you see around. Wildlife Action is a nature preservation area and there is no trash services. Please take your trash to dispose at home. We would like to make use of the facilities again and leave a good impression of our culture.
